1. Crack eggs into a mixing bowl. One to three eggs per person is perfect, depending on the size of your eggs. Make sure egg shell doesn’t get in the bowl – if it does, remove it immediately!
2. Using a fork, whisk your eggs. You can add salt and pepper if you like, and maybe even some freshly cut chives or onions. Alternatively, you can add milk and cheese or sour cream for a cheesey, fluffy omelette. Some people like to add a tablespoon of water to make the omelette more fluffy. Be careful not to overwhisk.
3. Pour your egg mixture into the frypan. You should use a non-stick frypan which has heated oil or butter on it. Some people find the smell of butter too overwhelming, so vegetable or olive oil can be a good substitute. The heat of your frypan is a contentious issue – most people like to have it “as hot as they dare”, to quote Delia, but if the pan is too hot, your eggs can burn.
   
   
   Eggs cook very quickly, so I prefer to use a moderately hot setting instead of the hottest setting possible. The size of the frypan is also very important – if it’s too small, then your eggs will be too fat and won’t cook properly; if it’s too large then your eggs will spread out too thin and become stiff. A 6-inch diameter pan is perfect for making one omelette.
4. After pouring, leave the egg mixture untouched for five seconds. Soon you’ll see some bubbling around the sides, indicating that the egg is cooking. Tilt the pan to 45 degrees to your left, and scrape back the middle of the egg, allowing the egg mixture to flow onto the pan. Tilt to the right and do the same on that side. As you keep doing this, egg mixture will flow down to the frypan and the egg will cook, until there is very little runny egg mixture on top. If you use a lower heat setting, then you can skip this step and merely swirl the egg mixture gently – the egg will cook slightly more slowly and thoroughly due to the lower heat.
5. At this stage, add any toppings on top of the egg and fold it over. Omelette fillings are entirely up to you – you can add cheese, mushrooms, meat, herbs, pepper or any other vegetables or deli meats.
6. Remove the egg from the frypan after you’ve folded it over – eggs will continue to cook even after you remove them from the heat. Make sure any meat that you add has been pre-cooked.

Alternatives to this “folded” omelette cooking method include the flat omelette. To make a flat omelette, beat eggs in a bowl, add fillings, and then pour the mixture onto a frypan. Flip the egg over once the bottom side is done. I’ve found that cooking a flat omelette is easier if you use less eggs and less mixture – if the egg mixture is too thick or too large, it’s difficult to flip over. Fillings are usually limited to onions/chives and maybe some herbs. Again, a six-inch skillet or frypan is perfect for this kind of omelette.

Another variation is the frittata or spanish omelette. This variation involves more eggs and more fillings – it’s generally much thicker, and eaten like a pie. For instance, to make a frittata, you might use 8 eggs in a 6-inch frypan. This omelette is generally cooked slowly over low heat, and once it is almost done, it’s transferred to the grill. After it’s cooked, it’s normally cut into wedges and can be eaten either hot or cold.

• Omelettes cook very fast, so plan on making one omelette per person
• Have the fillings ready beforehand – this will make the cooking faster
• Make sure any additions and fillings for your omelette are pre-cooked. This is very important to keep in mind for meats, but the same holds true for hard vegetables like mushrooms and carrots as well!
• The best omelettes are made with fresh eggs. Eggs can stay fresh for up to two weeks after you purchased them – however, make sure they’re not rotten before you whisk them up. A rotten egg will ruin the whole omelette.

Accept That They Might Not Want Your Help

The first thing to do is to accept that they might not want your help. If you truly care about someone then you must not force your “help” on them. Depressed people often feel detached from the world and just want to be by themselves. Don’t force your presence or suggestions.

Many people feel the need to be the savior and help out, but this is just an ego trip. Don’t try to make yourself feel better by helping out, and don’t be offended when the person turns away.

Don’t Neglect Your Own Needs

Another thing that many people do when trying to help a loved one with depression is to forget about themselves.

Their world becomes all about helping the depressed person, to the extent that they can’t take time away for themselves. This can lead to frustration, stress, burn out and blaming the other person. Remember to take time for yourself, to relax and to have fun. Depressed people can really bring you down, so remember to make sure that your health is ok – being happy and healthy yourself is one of the best things you can do for your loved one.

So make sure that you’re eating properly and getting enough sunshine and social interaction. Watch some sitcoms if needed, but make sure you laugh a little each day.

Every Depression Is Different

No two people are the same. No two people suffer through depression the same way.

The sad fact is that some of these tips will work for some people, some won’t. Use your best judgement of the situation and know when to proceed. Usually, the person’s reaction will make it clear.

Talk to the person when the depression is less serious. Ask them what you can do, and encourage them to get professional help.

Often they will deny being depressed. In this case, you should judge whether they’re in denial or honestly not clinically depressed. You can encourage them to seek treatment but don’t press too much. Encourage them to view the depression as seperate from who they are, and not to take it personally.

Ask them if you can do anything to help – often they will say nothing, or that you don’t need to help. But if you are sincere and persistent, they might let you onto something.

Don’t Trivialize It

Try not to say things like, “Why can’t you just get on with your life?” and other things that indicate that the person is being depressed and unhappy on purpose.

It’s hard for non-depressed people to understand what it’s like. Don’t try to force your loved one to be or act “normal”.

Instead, show them that you understand that what they are going through is difficult and that you’ll be there for them.

Don’t Force Cheerfulness

Sometimes you want to help, and say supportive things and crack jokes.

This is one of those things that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. If the depression is milder, then jokes and cheerfulness might work. But in more serious depressions, the person is usually detached from the world and will view everything you do from afar. In such a situation they might feel annoyed or guilty that you are trying so hard to cheer them up, to no avail. So don’t force cheerfulness when you sense it’s not working.

Try To Get Them To Go Outside

Going outside and getting some sunshine can help people who are depressed feel better. However, sometimes the depression is severe and the person feels a need to detach themselves. Or they feel that they are judged unfavorably by other people and going outside can make this worse.

Interacting with other people can help the depressed person feel better, if they like the other people. However this might only work with very close friends and will work better if the person is an extrovert. However most of the time the person will not want to interact with others or go outside.

Encourage Them To Take Action

If they feel well enough to do so, you can encourage them to go for some physical activity like going for a walk. Of course, for people with severe depression this probably won’t work.

Learn More About Depression

Try to learn more about clinical depression, so that you can understand where the person is coming from and what is going on from their perspective.

If you are their caregiver, read up on depression medication. These days drugs are often prescribed to help with depression, and if the depression is severe they can help; however, you should also learn that these drugs have very harmful side effects and should be ceased as soon as it’s practical.

Help Them With Chores

Depressed people sometimes have a hard time doing basic things. You can help them to do essential chores such as doing the dishes or heating up a meal. While this might seem trivial to you, depressed people often have a hard time getting these essential things done.

Monitor Suicidal Thoughts

Depressed people often become suicidal. Monitor mentions of death, writing up a plan or will, giving away possessions, etc. Depressed people don’t talk about death for attention – they are usually thinking of getting away from it all. Other things can include hoarding of medicines and alcohol – try to keep sharp objects and stockpiles of drugs away from someone who is depressed.

Encourage Them To Get Help

Many people live in denial or feel that getting help is a sign of weakness. Encourage them to seek professional help. Tell them to think of their body and their depression as something external – for instance, say “if your car had engine trouble, would you take it personally or go take it to a mechanic?” Encourage them to see their depression as something curable.

Stay In Touch

If you are not very close with the depressed person, make an effort to stay in touch. Depressed people often do not feel worthy of love or attention, but communicating with them is helpful for them. So call or visit them once in a while.

Go To A Support Group

It is very helpful for both caregivers and people suffering from depression to go to a support group. Knowing that other people are going through the same things as you are is very comforting. And you can learn from other people’s experiences. The depressed person will often see concrete evidence that depression does fade and ultimately pass away with help.

Symptoms of Rabies In Humans

Rabies takes a while to affect a human, and it takes a while for the symptoms to become present.

This period of time that it takes, from being affected to showing the symptoms, is called the incubation period.

This is the period of time during which you can be cured of rabies by getting a shot. If you wait till the symptoms are present, then you will be too late.

The incubation period for rabies is three to twelve weeks.

There have been cases where the incubation period has lasted nineteen years, but in most cases the incubation period will not last more than a year.

The length of the incubation period depends on how close the bite was to the brain. If you were bitten on the face or neck the incubation period will be shorter whereas if you were bitten on your finger or legs, then the period will be longer.

Initial Symptoms of Rabies

Initial symptoms of rabies can be easily confused with any other minor disease. These symptoms are flu-like in nature. They include having headaches, fever, chills, insomnia, loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, having a sore throat and/or vomiting. Many people will also experience soreness or itchiness around the area of the bite.

Advanced Symptoms of Rabies

The initial symptoms of rabies last between two to ten days. After this time, the advanced symptoms of rabies being to develop. The advanced symptoms of rabies can take the form of either furious rabies (which accounts for 80% of all rabies cases) or dumb rabies.

Furious Rabies Symptoms

People afflicted with furious rabies show signs of aggression and hyperactivity as well as believing things that are not true. They can show a tendency to bite, attack or thrash out. In addition, they can be agitated, delusional and/or have hallucinations. They can also have a sustained high fever. Excessive sweating and saliva production may also happen, and the hair on their skin might stand up. Many people will also develop a fear of water and have trouble swallowing. People affected with furious rabies will usually fall into a coma and die after ten to twelve days in the coma.

Dumb Rabies Symptoms

People affected with dumb rabies will exhibit signs of tiredness and lethargy. They will usually experience a weakening of muscles, paralysis and loss of sensation in the arms and legs. As with furious rabies, people exhibiting symptoms of dumb rabies will fall into a coma and then die from heart or lung failure.

If you are in an area where there has been an outbreak of rabies, see a doctor immediately after being bitten or scratched by an animal such as a dog, cat or bat.

Always seek medical assistance if you are bitten by a bat. If you think that a small child, who can’t communicate being bitten, has been bitten by a bat, take them to a doctor (for instance if you find a bat in their room). It is important to see a doctor quickly – by the time symptoms are present it is too late.

Symptoms of rabies in an animal follow two stages, like with humans.

The first stage has very minor symptoms that can be easily overlooked. The animal will exhibit signs of loss of appetite and a high temperature. They will also behave differently from normal – for instance, they might seem extremely friendly and tame around strangers although they were previously not so tame.

The second stage is called the “mad dog” stage. This is the stage where the animal will show very aggressive behavior. During this stage of rabies they may:

• bark constantly, growl or make noises to indicate they are annoyed
• show no fear of anything, even normal enemies such as larger dogs or other animals
• try to bite and scratch everything, including non-living things such as toys and furniture.

The final stage is called the “paralytic” stage. In this stage, the animal will seem to be choking and may foam at the mouth. They may have paralysis of the jaw or area around the mouth. The jaws of dogs will usually drop.

White spots on nails are actually fairly common. The reason for most of these causes is being hit on the base of your nails – that’s why white spots are most common in little kids. However, adults do bang into things with their nails as well. In addition, you can get white spots if your manicurist presses against your nails too hard.

White spots usually show up around six weeks after the injury. By this time you’ve probably already forgotten that it happened!

However, nails do take a while to grow, so the white spots might be there for upto eight months.

There are a lot of explanations as to why you get white spots.

As a child, you might have been told that you got them because you weren’t eating enough. I’ve heard that white spots are caused by a lack of milk in your diet – as well as the opposite, that they’re caused by drinking too much milk! White foods do seem to be associated with white spots – other common urban myths are that these white spots are caused by eating too much mayonnaise or cheese.

Other theories are that white spots are caused by a calcium deficiency or a zinc deficiency. However neither of these facts are true. White spots are not indicative of any kind of nutritional deficiency at all!

Odd colors and shapes in fingernails can be indicative of diseases, however, by the time you notice them, you will have other symptoms as well. For instance, if your nails turn completely white then you probably have a kidney disease – but by the time this happens, you will probably have other symptoms and have been diagnosed by a doctor.

So the next time you notice white spots on your nails, don’t stress about it, or feel that you need to go load up on zinc or calcium! And if you notice children with white spots on their fingernails, they’re probably just busy playing. Ignore the white spots, and they’ll go away with time. If you’re the one with white spots and they really do bother you then you can always cover them up with some pretty nailpolish till they go away!

Rotting Fruit

First, if your doors and windows are open, or if you have a tiny tear in your window screen, fruit flies will come in from outside. These pesky insects are attracted to smells, especially garbage-like smells. They’ll be attracted to your home if they can smell garbage, beer cans or bottles, or fruit and vegetables. They especially love rotting fruit and vegetables. Certain plants will also attract them.

The simple way to get rid of fruit flies that come in from outside is to keep your home clean of garbage. Get rid of empty beer and alcohol containers immediately and empty your trash on a regular basis.

Try to keep fruits inside the fridge and not out on the counter. If you suspect that your plants are the culprits, take them outside.

But Everything’s Closed!

You rid your home of garbage immediately, and you don’t leave rotting fruits and vegetables lying around. So how come they’re still in your home?!

This is the really sneaky way fruit flies can get into your home: they get in even before they’re born.

Fruit flies like to lay eggs under the skin of fresh fruits and vegetables, and even on some plants. So if you’ve bought some fresh produce, chances are that it contains fruit fly eggs or larvae. This is especially likely if you buy organic produce. Most produce is washed with harsh chemicals and bleach, which gets rid of the fruit fly eggs and larvae, but organic produce is not treated at all.

The eggs will become fully grown fruit flies in no time at all – so these insects will soon be hovering around your home.

One solution to prevent this is to keep your fresh produce in your fridge, where the eggs won’t hatch. And always clean your kitchen thoroughly, since fruit flies like to lay eggs on rotting or fermenting produce – wipe down your sink with bleach if you need to, and do the same for your empty trash can.

However, if you like to have organic produce like I do, and like to display them in a pretty fruit bowl (I know I do) then you might want to make yourself a fruit fly trap. Leave some apple cider vinegar outside, and add a few drops of liquid dishwashing liquid, and soon your fruit flies will be gone. Or you can have some apple cider vinegar in a cup, cover it tightly with cling wrap, and then poke some tiny holes in the wrap. The flies will be able to get in but they can’t get out.

Remember to use up fruit and produce fast. One overly ripe tomato left outside can lead to a swarm of fruit flies within a week!

Fruit flies don’t even need fruits to multiply – they can breed in the slimy drains or a slightly wet mop or sponge. So keep an eye out that you don’t have anything slightly wet or slimy lying outside. And, in the worst case scenario, keep some apple cider vinegar handy

You see, dogs aren’t carnivores. They’re omnivores, but that doesn’t mean they’ll eat everything in sight!

Years ago, their ancestors did do that however. They also would sometimes eat their prey whole – including the stomach and intestines, which often contained undigested grass. So perhaps that’s how dogs developed their taste for grass and other greenery.

Dogs have since started eating green plants and vegetables, and they are able to get some nutrients from those. Most often however, the greenery closest to hand is grass. So dogs eat grass… However, that doesn’t really explain why dogs will usually throw up after eating the grass!

If they have an upset stomach or are feeling gassy, they might chomp down some grass. If they don’t chew the grass properly or swallow the blades whole, then the sides of the grass blades will tickle their stomach lining, causing them to throw up. This will make them feel better if they’ve been feeling a bit ill. It’s also thought that dogs sometimes have a bit of grass and induce vomit in order to rid their stomach of parasites and other nasty things.

Dogs don’t chew cud the way cows do, however they will sometimes nibble on a bit of grass.

If your dog eats grass frequently without throwing up, then he might be getting some nutrition from it, especially if he also has some other green vegetables once in a while. Eating grass is not harmful for your dog. However if he constantly does this, you might want to talk to your vet who could suggest some other sources of nutrition. Your dog might also not be getting enough fiber in his diet, so you could consider ways of adding in more fiber.

For me, this means that I avoid dresses that are clingy. Infact, I try to avoid any kind of clingy material at all, and look for slightly stiff or textured material.

Next, I look at the cut of the dress. Sheath dresses that go straight up and down without enhancing any of my bumpy bits are a great choice. Alternatively, you might be too harsh on yourself, you may think you have really flabby arms for instance, whereas your arms look great. So try something on, and be honest about how you look.
• Shop for your age
  Yes, there are women in their fifties who look great in a minidress, but if you’re not one of them, or you’re just not comfortable wearing something, admit it and buy something else. A few years back I stopped wearing those tiny miniskirts, and it’s a decision I haven’t regretted. If you feel like something isn’t right for you, don’t get it just because it’s “in fashion”. There are many great dresses for older women and nicer outfits you can choose from.

Having said that, here are some great ideas for spring outfits this year:

Rock the black.

I’m putting this one first because I’m a black-wearer myself. A lot of women who lived in busy cities find that black is a convenient and practical choice. But you can definitely add some spring flair to a black outfit too! Here, it’s done with accessories – a tan belt and brown or tan shoes can lend a lighter touch to a dark outfit. I would also add some jewelry, as well as a nice tan bag. Tan and light brown are definitely very popular colors this season.

Add some pink

Pink is one of my favorite colors, and right now I’m trying to add some more to my wardrobe. You can do this with nice earrings, bangles and scarves. Or you can opt for some pink clothes.

A pink dress is a classic spring outfit. Longer sleeves can be more modest, and a belt will add a bit more edginess. Select something in a comfortable flowy material for a relaxed look.

A pink top can also lend a femine touch. You can pair this with jeans, slacks, or an A-line skirt.

Tunics are definitely “in” this season and I love wearing them. They’re so versatile – you can wear them with jeans for a relaxed look, or with a leggings for a more “young” look. Either way, they’re comfortable and flattering.

Both stripes and florals are still popular, although I wouldn’t wear them both together! If you’re opting for a floral print, look for an edgey design or cut so that you don’t look dated.

Polka dots are also popular this season, so if you like dots, feel free to wear them with aplomb!

Spring is all about sudden weather changes, so no outfit would be complete without layers! Be stylish and practical this spring with the perfect feminine cardigans. Drape-front cardis, 3/4 sleeve cardigans and cropped cardigans are still stylish this season, as is the “perforated” and cable-knit style.

I like to have a cardigan in a nice basic color such as black or grey. It’s also a great idea to have “pops” of colors. I’ve noticed that bright blue and fuchsia are popular trends, though personally I’m looking for a baby pink cardigan to go with my new pink earrings! Yellow is a lovely color and if it suits you, do wear it! Yellow cardigans can brighten up any outfit.

Spring is also about rain! So keep things stylish with a nice trench coat – tan or khaki is a great, elegant choice. You could also wear a beret to protect your hair, but remember to keep an umbrella in your bag for those extremely rainy days! Boots are also a good idea for rainy days, and boots with a bit of a heel are more stylish (though they can be difficult to wear if you’re not used to high heels).
